Tarifa - Learn to Kitesurf Course

Adventure sports, especially water sports, have become very popular in recent years, and more and more women are finding that these sports are not necessarily only to be found in the male domain. Kitesurfing is becoming increasingly popular as a sport for women.

Like all new sports, Kitesurfing has its own learning curve. Many people can be up and riding in as little as six hours, although it can take longer for some people. Once you are up and surfing you have to learn to stay there. You will also need to stay upwind to get the best results. These things can be learned in your own time, and everyone learns at a different pace. Remembering that much of the skill of kitesurfing relies on your kite flying skill, rather than surfboarding skills may help to focus your learning in the right area. Being in good shape for kitesurfing is not the most important facet of the sport. People of all shapes and abilities can become proficient within a reasonable space of time. Being in good shape helps, as it does with many sports, but the main priorities are that you can swim and that you can be comfortable in the water. Much of your learning is likely to involve falling off the board, while your skills improve, so it is important that you have the ability to keep your head above water if you need to. There is no need to spend weeks at the gym strengthening your arms. One of the plus points of kitesurfing is it relies heavily on skill and balance. The harness that is used helps to distribute the weight of the board and kite through your body, meaning that it is how you distribute you weight that will enable you to manoeuvre the kite. However, one advantage that learning kitesurfing does have is that because most of the balance is derived from your lower body, it is likely to have a positive effect on your abdominals.

It is very much advisable that you take lessons. Lessons can be expensive initially, but they give you the opportunity to learn from people who know what they are doing, in a safe environment, and using their equipment, before having to spend your own hard earned cash. Kitesurfing equipment can be expensive but many of the schools will have several different types of equipment you can try before making the commitment to buy your own. You will need a board, kite, bar, pump and harness, and possibly a wet suit, but your instructor will tell you what is best for you. You may find that your school may have links with certain equipment stockists which may enable you to keep your costs as low as possible. Safety is paramount when learning an active sport, and under the watchful eye of an instructor you can be fairly sure that you are able to keep risk to a minimum. For more information go to Volcom uk
