Winter is the best time to learn in Tarifa

The beaches are empty and the weather is good. You have all the space you could want to make mistakes and learn without worrying about tangling lines with anyone.

The summer beach restrictions for bathers are lifted, so every spot up and down the coast is open. If one beach has no wind, or more often too much, you can drive to another where it is better. Your chances of getting out on any given day go up a long way.

Mild days and a steady wind

Tarifa's climate is mild all year. Winter days are often clear and sunny, and one New Year's Day we were at a barbecue on the beach in boardshorts.

Tarifa doesn't rely on passing weather systems for its wind. The Strait of Gibraltar acts as a wind tunnel, so it is one of the few places in the world with wind all year. In winter the main wind is the Poniente, which is the more pleasant of the two: it usually blows around force 4, cross onshore, and it is about as steady as wind gets.

Flights from all over Europe are cheap at this time of year, so the trip costs less too.
